Impacts on families
WW1 had a huge impact on the families of soldiers. Women during the war had to replace men in the workforce as most of the soldiers had gone to fight in the war. This left the older children in the family to take care of the house hold duties and looking after their siblings, which put heaps of pressure on them. When soldiers of the war returned they had suffered from the effects of mustard gas and shell shock, which tormented them. It would often take them a long time to recover from the trauma of the war. This had ended up making some of the women become responsible for supporting the entire family. The children of soldiers were scared of their Dad’s going to war as they had thoughts that they might ever see them again. However, for those children whose dad’s returned were confused as they didn't understand the effects of trauma on their fathers and didn't know how to communicate with them any more.
